At http://fishtext.com you can rent a number that you can send and recieve txts from and to.
I've been looking for something like this. It means people can txt me while I'm on a boat and I can see that message over satellite internet.

I Just wanted to add that Gotreception.com (http://www.gotreception.com) is a great resource for finding out where reception problems are most likely to occur
gotreception seems to be US and canada only. Useful for the US nomad.
Sadly I can't say I've ever been to that place yet.
